ECB's Lane Warns Persistent Energy Price Rise Could Weigh on Euro Zone Consumption
ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane said a sustained rise in energy prices could hit euro zone consumption by autumn, though the issue remains uncertain.
A sustained increase in energy prices could dampen personal consumption across the euro zone before the end of the year, European Central Bank Chief Economist Philip Lane said on Friday.
Speaking at a conference in Ireland, Lane said the risk to household spending from costlier energy was not yet clear-cut and continued to pose a challenge for policymakers.
"What we see now is a rise in energy prices, if that persists, maybe that will hit consumption in the autumn, and so that remains an uncertain issue," he said.
The remarks point to the delicate balance facing the central bank as it weighs the outlook for consumer demand against the trajectory of energy costs. Lane did not indicate how the ECB might respond should the price pressure endure, framing the matter as one of ongoing uncertainty rather than a settled forecast.
His comments come as households across the currency bloc remain sensitive to movements in energy costs, which feed directly into disposable income and spending decisions.
