ECI sets October 6 polling for bypolls across four states

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a single-phase byelection schedule covering five Assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency. Voting will be held on October 6, 2026, with counting of votes slated for October 9, 2026.

The Assembly seats up for election are spread across three states and one Union Territory. In Tamil Nadu, bypolls will be held in Madurantakam and Dharapuram. Both seats fell vacant after the sitting AIADMK legislators — Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama — resigned to join the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady constituency will go to the polls. The seat was one of two won by Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy in the previous election; he has since vacated it, retaining the Mangalam constituency.

West Bengal will see byelections in Nandigram and Rejinagar. These vacancies arose after Suvendu Adhikari and Humayun Kabir, who had each won two seats in the last election, resigned from these constituencies.

The lone parliamentary seat on the list is Nagaon in Assam. The seat became vacant after BJP leader Pradyut Bordoloi, who had been elected on a Congress ticket, resigned from the Lok Sabha following his departure from the party.
