Education Ministry Rolls Out Six-Month Bridge Course for Primary Teachers

The Union Ministry of Education has introduced a six-month certificate bridge course in Primary Teacher Education, aimed at equipping practising primary school teachers with the training required for the foundational stage.

The programme is designed for teachers who already hold a Bachelor of Education degree. According to the ministry, it offers a route for such teachers to obtain the certification needed to teach at the primary level.

The National Institute of Open Schooling will implement the course. Its content is aligned with the framework laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education, and it focuses on child-centred, inclusive and developmentally appropriate teaching methods to improve the quality of education at the foundational and primary stages.

Structurally, the course combines six theory papers with a school-based practicum. It includes at least ten days of online contact classes and at least twenty days of school-based experience, an arrangement intended to link educational theory with actual classroom practice.

The ministry said the programme seeks to build primary-stage pedagogical skills and help teachers address the varied learning needs of young children. It also aims to foster reflective capacities and a view of teaching as a dynamic, context-sensitive and inquiry-based profession.

The initiative follows a 2024 Supreme Court judgment, cited by the ministry, which empowered the NCTE to devise a bridge course for appointees who were recruited as primary teachers without the D.El.Ed qualification. The course is accordingly meant for in-service primary teachers appointed between 28 June 2018 and 11 August 2023 to teach Classes I to V with a B.Ed degree, and specifically covers those whose appointments are protected under the relevant NCTE Gazette Notification.
