Egypt, Greece, Cyprus Pledge Deeper Energy Ties, Regional Stability at Summit
Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus agreed to boost energy cooperation and called for de-escalation in the Middle East at a trilateral summit in El Alamein.
The leaders of Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus convened in the Mediterranean city of El Alamein on Tuesday for a trilateral summit focused on deepening energy cooperation and addressing regional security challenges.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi hosted Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for talks that yielded a joint pledge to advance the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection project. El-Sissi described the planned link as a "real turning point" for regional integration in clean energy, connecting the Eastern Mediterranean to European markets.
Beyond the power cable, the three nations agreed to expand cooperation in the natural gas sector. El-Sissi noted that gas from Cyprus could be channeled through Egyptian infrastructure for re-export to Europe, generating economic benefits and enhancing energy security at regional and international levels.
Addressing the volatile situation in the Middle East, El-Sissi called for de-escalation and stressed the importance of political solutions to prevent a wider cycle of conflict. He reiterated Egypt's rejection of any attempts to undermine Arab nations and expressed full solidarity with them.
On Gaza, the leaders jointly called for upholding the ceasefire agreement and reaffirmed their support for a two-state solution. El-Sissi emphasized the need for full and sustained humanitarian access and firmly rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians or alter the demographic composition of Palestinian territories.
The trilateral partnership also extends to security and military coordination, covering counter-terrorism efforts, organized crime, and illegal migration. The Greek and Cypriot leaders were in Egypt for the summit and to attend the El Alamein International Airshow.
