Ernakulam's Recurring Thefts Raise Public Security Concerns
A series of thefts in Ernakulam has sparked public concern, prompting increased police patrols and surveillance in vulnerable areas.
A spate of thefts reported across Ernakulam district over the past few months has heightened public concerns about local security. At least ten incidents, varying in method and scale, have drawn significant attention, with the latest case involving a violent encounter in Pathalam.
On Thursday night, 62-year-old Saleem K.A. lost his right thumb while intervening to stop an unidentified man from snatching a gold chain belonging to his daughter-in-law. The police have not yet made an arrest in this case.
Earlier in the month, railway police apprehended three men from Assam in connection with robberies at the Aluva and Angamaly railway stations on August 28 and 30. Authorities recovered ₹40,000 in cash, four mobile phones, and six sovereigns of gold from the suspects.
Investigations have also led to the arrest of repeat offenders. In July, Hill Palace police detained Jijo Babu, a 39-year-old from Malayattoor, for allegedly stealing a woman's mobile phone. Police describe him as a serial offender whose method involved targeting women on crowded buses. The previous month, Kuruppampady police arrested Kollam native Babu A. for allegedly stealing ₹15,000, a mobile phone, and a tablet from a shop in Pulluvazhi.
While urban incidents have focused on cash, gold, and valuables, rural areas have not been spared. In August, at least three buffaloes were reported stolen from the Paravur region.
In response, police maintain that the incidents are sporadic and often minor. A senior city police officer noted that recent cases include the theft of electrical items, such as copper wires, from construction sites. To address the situation, authorities have intensified patrolling in vulnerable zones, increased monitoring of known suspects, and deployed shadow police in sensitive areas.
