EU to Unveil Sweeping Autumn Sanctions Against Russia, Top Diplomat Says

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announces plans for a major autumn sanctions package against Russia, aiming to increase pressure on Moscow.

The European Union is preparing its most extensive sanctions package against Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine, according to the bloc's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas. In an interview with a German newspaper, she indicated that the new measures are slated for autumn and are designed to intensify pressure on Moscow.

Kallas stated that existing EU sanctions have already inflicted significant damage on Russia's economy, depriving its war machine of over €1 trillion. She described the upcoming package as the most far-reaching listings since the conflict began, noting that its adoption would immediately increase the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by a third.

"The pressure must keep growing until Moscow ends its war," Kallas said, though she did not provide specific details on the timing or the exact nature of the new measures.

The announcement follows the EU's most recent sanctions package, approved in July, which targeted Russia's banking sector and cryptocurrency networks. The new proposals are expected to build on these efforts, further tightening economic restrictions on the country.
