EU Sees Genuine Engagement From China in Trade Talks, Sefcovic Says
EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic says Brussels sees genuine engagement from China in trade talks and wants concrete results.
The European Union has observed what it describes as genuine engagement from China in ongoing trade negotiations, according to the bloc's trade commissioner, Maros Sefcovic.
Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Tuesday, Sefcovic said the talks had shown a level of commitment from the Chinese side, though he stressed that the process must now deliver tangible outcomes.
He said the priority was to move beyond statements of intent and produce results that would stand up to scrutiny. "What would be of course very important is to move from rhetoric to concrete results, because this is what clearly would be expected from me. I need a credible outcome," he said.
The remarks point to the EU's focus on securing a deal that can be presented as substantive rather than merely procedural, as the two sides continue discussions on trade and economic security matters.
Sefcovic, who holds the trade and economic security portfolio in the European Commission, did not elaborate on specific areas of the negotiations or on a timeline for any agreement.
