EU Pledges Unwavering Support to Ukraine on Independence Day

European Council President Antonio Costa used Ukraine's Independence Day to deliver a strong message of solidarity, reaffirming the European Union's commitment to stand with Kyiv. During his visit to the capital on Monday, Costa joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders for official celebrations marking the occasion, which comes as Russia's full-scale invasion enters its fifth year.

In his address, Costa outlined the EU's continued backing, stating that the bloc would provide support "as much as necessary, for as long as necessary" — not only during the ongoing conflict but also in future peace negotiations and the country's reconstruction. He emphasized that the EU's vision extends beyond the immediate war, asserting that Ukraine's future within the European Union represents the strongest guarantee of long-term security and democratic stability for both Ukraine and Europe.

Costa also took a firm stance against Russia, declaring that international law must prevail and that Moscow will not succeed. He noted that despite more than four years of full-scale war, Russia has failed to achieve its objectives. The European Council President highlighted the devastating human toll and disastrous economic consequences of the conflict, adding that the war is draining Russia's resources and that unprecedented EU sanctions are having an impact. He vowed to intensify pressure until Russia ends the violence and shows a genuine commitment to peace.

"The European Union cannot be neutral when international law is being violated," Costa said. "We are not neutral. We are Ukrainian supporters."

The visit coincides with Ukraine's Independence Day, commemorating the country's declaration of sovereignty from Moscow on August 24, 1991. This year's observance unfolds against a backdrop of a grinding conflict, with no significant front-line changes for months and escalating aerial attacks that continue to claim civilian lives and damage critical infrastructure, despite prolonged international peace efforts.
