EU pledges €200 million for Greenland as Arctic rivalry deepens

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a €200 million investment package for Greenland during a two-day visit to the Danish Arctic territory. The funds will target critical minerals, renewable energy, and satellite communications, marking a significant expansion of EU engagement with the semi-autonomous region.

Speaking in Nuuk, von der Leyen declared that "the EU stands in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland," directly countering President Donald Trump's repeated insistence that the United States should control the world's largest island. Both Greenlandic and Danish authorities have firmly rejected Washington's overtures.

The visit underscores the Arctic's growing strategic importance as melting ice opens new shipping lanes and makes mineral wealth more accessible. Von der Leyen described the region as "one of the places where the tectonic plates of geopolitics collide," noting that Europe has a direct stake in its future.

Trump's campaign to acquire Greenland has strained transatlantic relations and unsettled NATO, even though European officials point out that the island is covered by the alliance's mutual defence commitments. A trilateral dialogue between the US, Denmark, and Greenland, agreed in January, has yet to produce results, and Trump reiterated his position at a NATO summit in July.

The Commission has also proposed increasing EU funding for Greenland from €225 million in the current budget cycle to €530 million for 2028-2034. While Greenland left the EU in 1985, its people retain EU citizenship through Denmark, and Brussels has long supported the territory's education system and fishing industry. A new EU Arctic strategy is expected in the coming months.
