EU's Kallas Says Russian Drone Strike on Ukraine-Poland Border Train Aimed at Deterring Western Support

A Russian drone attack on a train at Ukraine's border with NATO member Poland was intended to intimidate Western nations that back Kyiv, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said on Monday.
Kallas, speaking to reporters in the Finnish city of Rovaniemi, where she was attending a summit on Arctic strategy, said the strike was designed to frighten countries supporting Ukraine.
"I think we should act the opposite. We should show that we are there for Ukraine and we are not scared," she said.
The attack occurred on Sunday on the Ukrainian side of the border with Poland, a NATO member state. Kallas did not elaborate on the extent of damage or casualties, and no further operational details were immediately available.
Her remarks came as Western capitals weigh their continued military and political support for Ukraine, which has been fending off a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022. The border region with Poland serves as a key transit route for Western weapons and humanitarian aid entering Ukraine.
Kallas's call for a firm response reflects the EU's position that pressure on Kyiv's allies is aimed at eroding their resolve. She did not announce any new measures in her comments.
