EU Trade Chief Backs G20 Push on Excess Industrial Capacity
The EU's trade commissioner welcomed US efforts to tackle excess industrial capacity at the G20 and pushed for similar reforms at the WTO.
The European Union's trade commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, has welcomed the Trump administration's push to address excess industrial capacity, saying he is pursuing comparable reforms within the Group of 20 and the World Trade Organization.
Speaking at a roundtable with business executives in Milwaukee, Sefcovic said the issue was a central theme at this week's meeting of G20 trade ministers. He indicated that Brussels shares Washington's concern about overcapacity and wants the matter addressed through both the G20 framework and the WTO.
The commissioner also said the EU is working to deepen cooperation with the United States and other partners on critical minerals. The aim, he said, is to prevent the materials from being used as a geopolitical lever and to keep global supply chains secure.
Sefcovic's remarks place the EU alongside the US in seeking coordinated action on industrial overcapacity, while extending the agenda to the raw materials that underpin advanced manufacturing and clean energy technologies.
