Von der Leyen to invite frontier AI labs for talks on tackling risks
Ursula von der Leyen says she will invite the main frontier AI labs to discuss pacing the technology's frontier, as concerns over AI risks mount.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she will invite the world's leading frontier artificial intelligence laboratories to talks on managing the risks posed by the technology, in her annual address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
"I will invite the main frontier labs for a discussion on how we can support ongoing industry efforts to pace the frontier," she told EU lawmakers.
The move comes amid mounting concern about the potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence. Those worries were underscored by Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, who resigned and accused both his employer and OpenAI of racing toward self-improving superintelligence without acting responsibly. Coxon had previously worked at OpenAI.
Anthropic and OpenAI are among the leading frontier labs, which build the most advanced and powerful AI models in the world. Some researchers have called for the pace of AI development to slow down.
Von der Leyen said recently adopted landmark EU rules governing the use of artificial intelligence put Europe in a position to shape global efforts to address the risks.
She also proposed a ban on social media for children under 15, saying platforms must prove they are safe for children. Details of the proposal are expected on Thursday.
