EU to Consider Fresh Sanctions on Russian Individuals, Germany Signals
Germany says the EU will work on further sanctions against Russian individuals in the coming weeks, citing continued unity on Ukraine.
Germany’s foreign minister said on Wednesday that the European Union is preparing to impose additional sanctions on Russian individuals in the near future, signalling that the bloc’s pressure campaign against Moscow is far from over.
Johann Wadephul, speaking on the sidelines of an EU meeting in Ireland, said the bloc has already placed extensive sanctions on Russia but will continue refining its approach. "The EU has imposed extensive sanctions on Russia, but we will certainly continue to work on imposing sanctions on individuals in the coming weeks," he said.
Wadephul also underscored the bloc’s dual strategy of tightening pressure on Russia while sustaining high-level support for Ukraine. "Pressure on Russia is being stepped up and support for Ukraine also remains at a high level. That is the unity we are demonstrating at this time," he added.
The remarks come a day after the German government formally blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport last month and announced a series of retaliatory measures in response.
