Eurogroup Head Urges Euro Zone to Hold Fiscal Line as Borrowing Costs Rise

Eurogroup head Kyriakos Pierrakakis says euro zone economies must stick to agreed fiscal paths as rising sovereign bond yields pressure national budgets.

Euro zone countries should adhere to the budget paths they have agreed with European Union institutions, the head of the bloc's finance ministers said on Friday, warning that tightening global financial conditions are raising pressure on national budgets.

Speaking at a news conference in Dublin, Kyriakos Pierrakakis said rising sovereign bond yields reflect the tightening of global financial conditions, and that the strain on public finances will grow for as long as those conditions last.

"In times of uncertainty, credibility becomes an economic asset," he said, adding that staying on the agreed fiscal path is essential to keep financing conditions favourable and to protect the long-term sustainability of public finances.

His remarks underline the balancing act facing euro zone governments as borrowing costs climb, with market confidence seen as a key factor in keeping debt servicing affordable.

Pierrakakis did not announce new measures, but his comments signal continued emphasis on budget discipline across the currency area.
