Eurozone Bond Yields Steady Near Multi-Year Highs Ahead of ECB Decision

Eurozone bond yields held near multi-year highs as markets weighed energy prices, German politics, and the upcoming ECB rate decision.

Eurozone government bond yields remained elevated on Tuesday, hovering near levels not seen in over a decade, as investors balanced several competing market pressures ahead of the European Central Bank's (ECB) policy meeting later this week.

The yield on Germany's 10-year bond, the regional benchmark, was little changed at 3.38% in early trading — just below the 15-year peak touched last week. French and Italian 10-year yields also stayed close to their recent highs, with France's at 4.25% and Italy's marginally lower at 4.20%.

The primary focus for markets is Thursday's ECB meeting, where another interest rate hike is widely anticipated. The central question for investors is whether policymakers will signal their intentions for further tightening beyond this week.

Before that decision, however, several factors are complicating the outlook. Energy prices continue their relentless climb, with Brent crude approaching $100 per barrel and Dutch wholesale gas prices near their highest levels since late 2022. This inflationary pressure supports the case for aggressive rate action.

Adding to the mix, Germany's far-right AfD party secured a historic victory in a state election over the weekend, injecting fresh political uncertainty into the eurozone's largest economy.

Shorter-dated debt saw slight declines, with Germany's two-year yield dipping one basis point to 2.98%, reflecting some easing in near-term rate expectations.
