Judge Suspends Charges Against Ex-Marine Arrested Near Trump Golf Course

A Los Angeles County judge has suspended criminal proceedings against a former U.S. Marine arrested earlier this month near President Donald Trump's golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes. The defendant, 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele, will undergo a psychiatric evaluation after a pretrial assessment raised questions about his mental competency.

Judge John Lonergan Jr. ordered Taele to appear before the Hollywood Mental Health Court, citing statements made during the evaluation in which Taele falsely claimed to have served as a State Department official for 14 years. The judge also pointed to roughly 200 pages of writings found after the arrest, which included schedules for first lady Melania Trump and Secret Service personnel, as well as detailed plans for living "off the grid."

Taele was arrested on August 5 at Trump National Golf Course Los Angeles, where the president was scheduled to attend a Republican National Committee dinner. Witnesses reported seeing him wearing an earpiece and photographing the venue. A search of his pickup truck uncovered a loaded 9mm pistol, binoculars, and a badge labeled "security protection agent."

Authorities have charged Taele with multiple felonies, including possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun and receiving a large-capacity magazine, along with a misdemeanor count of carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. The judge declined to set bail, and Taele will remain in custody until a September 9 hearing.

During Wednesday's court appearance in Torrance, Taele wore a vest designed to prevent self-harm. Nearly a dozen family members and friends were present, several visibly emotional. His public defender, A.J. Bayne, said it was too early to determine whether mental health issues would factor into his legal defense, adding that Taele has strong family support and that "people assume too much" about his motives.

Taele is a decorated Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2008 and 2016. He attained the rank of corporal and received multiple commendations, including two Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, a Navy Unit Commendation, and service medals for national defense and the Global War on Terrorism.

Judge Lonergan described the case as "alarming" given the current political climate and rising violence, though he did not indicate whether the writings revealed any specific political ideology or motive.
