Fall 2025 Movie Guide: Big Sequels, Star-Studded Dramas and Festival Hits

The fall film season is shaping up to be a busy one, with a diverse slate of movies heading to theaters and streaming platforms between September and November. The lineup includes major studio sequels, independent dramas, and high-profile documentaries.
Sequels and Franchise Fare
Several beloved franchises are returning. Tyler Perry reunites the three couples from his 2007 hit in "Why Did I Get Married Again?" on Netflix. Warner Bros. brings back Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and Dianne Wiest for "Practical Magic 2," a sequel to the 1998 witch-themed original. Sony Pictures is offering a new adaptation of the horror video game "Resident Evil," directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams. For family audiences, DreamWorks Animation presents "Forgotten Island," and the "Shaun the Sheep" series returns with a Halloween-themed third feature, "The Beast of Mossy Bottom." Apple TV+ will debut "Matchbox: The Movie," an action-adventure based on the Mattel toy cars, starring John Cena.
Star-Studded Dramas and Thrillers
A number of high-profile original films are also on the calendar. "By Any Means" is a 1960s-set crime thriller from director Elegance Bratton, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg. Paul Greengrass directs Andrew Garfield in "The Uprising," a historical drama about a 14th-century rebellion. Alejandro G. Iñárritu teams up with Tom Cruise for "Digger," a sci-fi epic about a powerful man attempting to save humanity. Aaron Sorkin returns with "The Social Reckoning," a follow-up to "The Social Network" starring Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg and Mikey Madison as whistleblower Frances Haugen.
Other notable titles include "Heart of the Beast," a survival thriller starring Brad Pitt and directed by David Ayer; "The Weight," a 1930s-set thriller with Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe; and "Verity," an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. Saoirse Ronan stars in "Bad Apples" as a teacher who takes extreme measures with a student.
Documentaries and International Cinema
Documentary fans have much to look forward to, including Alex Gibney's "Knife," a portrait of author Salman Rushdie after the 2022 attack, and a backstage film on Oasis's reunion tour titled "Don't Look Back in Anger." Acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin returns with the sci-fi epic "Hope," featuring a mix of Korean and Hollywood stars. Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's Palme d'Or winner "Fjord," starring Sebastian Stan, explores a family's cultural clash after moving to Norway.
The season also includes "Tenzing," a film about Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's historic Everest climb, and "Unabomber," a Netflix drama starring Jacob Tremblay as Ted Kaczynski.
