US regulator moves to expand spectrum for space-based broadband

US FCC proposes opening over 1,000 MHz in 12 GHz and 42 GHz bands for satellite broadband and inter-satellite links.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced plans to open additional wireless spectrum for space-based broadband services. The proposal, scheduled for a vote on September 30, would make over 1,000 megahertz of spectrum in the 12 GHz and 42 GHz bands available for high-speed satellite connectivity.

The move is intended to support broadband services for homes, in-flight connectivity, and maritime communications. It would also facilitate traffic-routing functions within satellite ground networks. FCC Chair Brendan Carr said the changes would have an impact both on Earth and in the skies, adding that extra capacity for inter-satellite links would improve resilience and connectivity for ships, planes, and vehicles, while also enabling new industrial and commercial uses in space.

Alongside the spectrum proposal, the FCC is advancing plans to modernise rules for ultra-wideband technology. This could assist in industrial applications, vehicle technologies, and package tracking. Other affected systems include door locks, key fobs, and imaging technologies used by public safety and rescue teams.

The commission is also seeking permitting reforms to accelerate the deployment of modern internet infrastructure, which it says will boost space-based communications. In April, the FCC had already eased power limits on satellite spectrum use, a step that benefited space-based broadband providers. The latest proposal is expected to generate up to $2 billion in economic benefits through increased broadband use.
