Democratic Senator John Fetterman is set to make a surprise video appearance at President Donald Trump's Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, according to multiple media reports. The move underscores the Pennsylvania lawmaker's growing estrangement from his party's mainstream on issues ranging from immigration to foreign policy.
Fetterman's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the reports. The video address is expected to include praise for bipartisan efforts to support the domestic steel industry and a clear distancing from the Democratic Party's left wing.
The two-day gathering, informally dubbed "Trumpapalooza," is part of Republican efforts to consolidate support ahead of November's midterm elections. The party currently holds a 53-47 Senate majority, though independent analysts note that several swing-state seats are increasingly competitive.
Despite his willingness to break ranks, Fetterman has rejected speculation that he might switch parties. In a recent Fox News interview, he stated, "I'm not going to be a Republican, but I'm going to be a Democrat that's going to have a conversation with whoever is playing it straight."
His readiness to defy party lines has drawn comparisons to former Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, centrists who left the Democratic Party and frequently frustrated its leadership. However, unlike those predecessors, Fetterman has not sought legislative concessions or leverage from his position. Instead, he maintains that he simply votes according to his convictions.
Known for his imposing stature and casual attire of hoodies and gym shorts on the Senate floor, Fetterman built a working-class persona that aided his 2022 victory. That image has since collided with the party's activist base. He recently described the rise of progressive activism as "an orgy of socialism."
His relationship with fellow Democrats has grown more strained following a Wall Street Journal report citing former staff and lawmakers who claimed he prioritised relationships with conservative commentators over his senatorial duties. Fetterman did not respond to the paper's requests for comment.
