Pune to Host Specialised Workshop on Film Preservation and Restoration
A 10-day workshop in Pune will train 24 participants in film preservation, archiving, digitization, and restoration techniques.
The NFDC-National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI) and the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, are jointly organising a specialised workshop on moving image preservation. Scheduled from October 5 to 15, 2026 (excluding weekends), the programme will be held at both institutions' campuses in Pune.
The course, titled "Moving Images: Preservation, Archiving, Digitization and Restoration," is designed for students, researchers, and aspiring professionals. It aims to blend theoretical knowledge with practical skills, covering topics such as film identification, manual cleaning, celluloid projection, and digital film restoration. Participants will also learn about metadata, preventive conservation, and audio restoration.
A key feature of the workshop is hands-on exposure to NFDC-NFAI's facilities, including its vaults, library, and projection room. The programme also includes visits to institutions like the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and the Reserve Bank of India Archives to showcase diverse archival practices. A dedicated session will offer insights into the workflows of the Thai Film Archive.
Industry partner Prasad Corp. will contribute technical expertise and equipment for film repair and digital restoration. FTII Vice-Chancellor Dhiraj Singh noted that the initiative bridges film education and heritage preservation. NFDC Managing Director Prakash Magdum emphasised the goal of sharing institutional skills with the next generation.
