Fit India Sundays on Cycle: 88th Edition Held at JLN Stadium Ahead of BRICS Summit
The 88th Fit India Sundays on Cycle event, held at JLN Stadium, saw 5,000 participants and BRICS envoys, ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya led the 88th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. The event, held under the BRICS Run & Ride 2026 initiative, saw participation from Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir, wrestler Sangram Singh, and actor Madhurima Tuli, alongside over 5,000 citizens.
The cycling drive was simultaneously conducted at more than 25,000 locations across the country, including SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence, Khelo India State Centres of Excellence, and Khelo India Centres.
Dr. Mandaviya noted that the 88th edition holds special significance as India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam on September 12-13. He welcomed the distinguished representatives from BRICS partner nations who joined the event, including envoys from Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Belarus, Cuba, Ethiopia, and Russia.
Highlighting the benefits of cycling, the Minister said it promotes fitness, reduces pollution, and eases traffic congestion. He urged citizens to step away from screens for an hour daily and engage in outdoor activities. The event also featured an ITBP brass band performance, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Gautam Gambhir, who flagged off the ride, called the initiative a movement rather than just an event, emphasising that a fitter India will become stronger and more self-reliant. Senior government officials, including Secretaries from the Department of Sports, Department of Youth Affairs, and Ministry of External Affairs, were also present.
The event was organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India, Raahgiri Foundation, and MY Bharat, and took place a day after National Sports Day.
