Fitch Affirms UK's AA- Rating, Cites Policy Credibility and Market Depth
Fitch has affirmed the UK's 'AA-' sovereign rating with a stable outlook, citing a diversified economy, credible policy framework, and stronger political footing.
Fitch Ratings has reaffirmed the United Kingdom's long-term sovereign credit rating at 'AA-' with a stable outlook, a decision announced on Friday. The agency's assessment underscores the country's structural economic strengths, including its high-income, diversified, and flexible economy, as well as a credible macroeconomic policy framework.
Fitch also highlighted the UK's deep capital markets and the international reserve status of the pound sterling as key sources of financing flexibility. These factors, the agency said, provide a solid buffer against potential shocks.
The affirmation comes amid fresh official data showing the UK economy expanded by 0.3% in June, an unexpected uptick. That growth was supported by a temporary easing in energy prices following the Iran conflict, the start of the men's soccer World Cup, and unseasonably warm weather.
While the positive reading offers some encouragement for Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who assumed office in July after Keir Starmer's resignation, significant challenges remain. These include ongoing concerns over fiscal discipline and the lingering economic effects of the Iran war.
Fitch noted that Burnham's stronger position within the Labour Party and higher public approval ratings should foster greater political stability for the remainder of the parliamentary term. The agency's action follows similar affirmations from S&P in April and Moody's in November 2025.
