Donalds, Jolly Win Florida Primaries, Setting Up November Clash

Florida's gubernatorial race is set. U.S. Representative Byron Donalds secured the Republican nomination on Tuesday, while former Representative David Jolly won the Democratic primary. The two will now compete in November to succeed outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis.

Donalds, who would become the state's first Black governor if elected, addressed supporters at a Universal Studios resort hotel. He acknowledged calls from his primary rivals, including former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner and political newcomer James Fishback, who pledged their support for the general election.

"Let's go beat David Jolly in November," Donalds told the cheering crowd.

The congressman outlined a platform focused on government transparency and efficiency. He promised to post all state contracts, budgets, and fees online for public review. Donalds also pledged to expand the state's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative launched under Governor DeSantis, to cover all local governments and state agencies.

"Taxpayers deserve to know that their hard-earned dollars are being spent efficiently, transparently, and with total integrity," Donalds said.

Jolly, a former congressman and MSNBC commentator, was characterized by Donalds as a "career political insider" and "Washington lobbyist." The Republican nominee framed the race as a choice between his limited-government vision and what he called the "change that Florida cannot afford."

The November election will test President Donald Trump's influence in his adopted state and whether Democrats can re-establish Florida as a competitive battleground. The state has shifted notably to the right since Trump's 2016 victory, though Democrats hope to capitalize on his current approval ratings.
