France to Seek 54 Billion Euros in Budget Savings for 2027

France's 2027 budget will include a 54 billion euro savings drive, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has said.

France's 2027 budget will incorporate a savings drive of 54 billion euros (about $62 billion), Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has said, warning that the fiscal deficit would otherwise climb past 6.5% of economic output.

In remarks to Le Figaro, Lecornu set out the pressures that would materialise without corrective measures. Social welfare spending would rise by 22 billion euros, while the cost of servicing the country's debt would add a further 10 billion euros. Spending by local governments would also increase by 7 billion euros if left unchecked.

The figures point to a widening gap between expenditure and revenue that the government intends to address through the planned savings package. The deficit ratio cited by Lecornu — above 6.5% of economic output — is the level the government expects if no action is taken.

The prime minister's comments offer an early indication of the scale of consolidation Paris is preparing for 2027, with the bulk of the adjustment aimed at containing growth in welfare, debt-servicing and local authority costs.
