French Maize Crop Ratings Plunge to Record Low as Harvest Begins

The condition of France's grain maize crop has deteriorated to its worst level on record, according to the latest weekly data from the country's farm office, FranceAgriMer. As of August 31, only 27% of the crop was rated in good or excellent condition, a slight decline from 28% the previous week. This marks the lowest score since records began in 2011, and a dramatic fall from the 62% recorded at the same time last year.

Maize has been the cereal crop hardest hit by the summer's extreme weather, as its growing season peaks during the hottest months. The French agriculture ministry has already forecast a 35% drop in production from last year, with some analysts predicting output could halve, reaching levels not seen since 1976.

The latest decline in crop ratings occurred despite a brief period of cooler temperatures and showers last week. However, hot and dry conditions have since returned, with temperatures expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius in parts of southern France.

Farmers have begun the harvest, with 3% of the crop gathered by Monday. This pace is slightly ahead of the five-year average of 1% for the same week, likely as growers move to salvage what they can from the damaged fields.
