France-Sweden Frigate Deal Bolsters European Defence Ties
France and Sweden sign a €4.3 billion frigate contract, which Macron says strengthens European industrial military cooperation.
French President Emmanuel Macron has said a major frigate contract signed with Sweden reinforces European industrial military cooperation. He expressed hope that other allies would join similar initiatives.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Macron said the partnership demonstrates that European sovereignty is being built jointly. "France and Sweden in the European Union and in NATO show that European sovereignty is being built together and the success of this partnership give us hope that other allies will join us," he stated.
The comments came after Sweden signed a contract to purchase four frigates from France's Naval Group for €4.3 billion. The deal marks a significant step in defence collaboration between the two nations, which are both members of the EU and NATO.
The agreement highlights the growing emphasis on European-led defence procurement and industrial cooperation, as nations seek to strengthen their military capabilities through joint ventures.
