French Energy Unions Call Strike Over Benefits and Pay Review

French energy sector unions have filed strike notices for next Tuesday, protesting a government proposal to limit wage growth and phase out subsidised energy tariffs for workers and retirees. The action follows a July recommendation from the Court of Auditors, which estimated that discounted gas and electricity access cost state-owned utility EDF over €700 million in lost revenue last year.

Strike notices have been lodged at EDF, Belgian gas terminal operator Fluxys, and French gas terminal operator Elengy. Union members say the energy discount is a core part of compensation, and a CGT representative in the gas sector expects strong turnout due to widespread opposition to the auditors' proposals.

EDF defended the perk, stating that preferential access to products is common among large firms and encourages responsible consumption. A company spokesperson said the benefit is appropriate given the workforce's role in the firm's industrial success.

The 24-hour action could disrupt gas deliveries across Europe, which is currently refilling storage ahead of winter. France, the continent's largest LNG importer, relies on nuclear power for roughly 70% of its electricity. A union source indicated further strikes are possible after Tuesday.

A government official said discussions are ongoing, with options including replacing the flat-rate discount with a consumption-based allowance, but stressed the need to follow the Court of Auditors' guidance. The court also recommended limiting annual pay increases at EDF, which faces heavy investment costs for reactor upgrades and new builds.

Fluxys said it was too early to assess operational impact, while Elengy confirmed all energy-sector unions had called for action but could not yet specify consequences.
