The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has prohibited the sale of compounded asafoetida (hing) manufactured by Everest and LG after laboratory tests revealed the products did not conform to prescribed quality norms.
The regulator found that the samples contained excessive starch and a lower-than-permitted level of alcohol-soluble extract, which are key indicators of purity and authenticity in compounded hing. These deviations place the products outside the parameters set under the country's food safety regulations.
In response to the findings, FSSAI has directed the manufacturers to initiate a voluntary recall of the affected batches from the market. The move is aimed at protecting consumer health and ensuring that only compliant food products remain available for sale.
Compounded hing, a common kitchen staple used as a flavouring agent, is expected to meet specific compositional standards. The regulator's action underscores its commitment to enforcing quality control across widely consumed food items.
