West Bank Mourns Teenager Killed in Nablus Refugee Camp
A 14-year-old Palestinian boy was killed by Israeli forces in Nablus. His funeral drew mourners to the Askar refugee camp.
Mourners gathered in the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday for the funeral of 14-year-old Islam Ajouri, who was shot and killed by Israeli forces, according to the territory's Health Ministry.
The teenager was in the Askar refugee camp when Israeli troops, who had arrived earlier in the morning, were withdrawing from the area. His uncle, Nehad Ajouri, said the forces opened fire indiscriminately during the operation.
"They started to shoot indiscriminately and barbarically without distinguishing between stones, trees, or people," Nehad said, adding that his nephew was struck in the waist. He described the boy as a martyr and said his death could be a spark for victory.
The funeral procession, which began at Rafidia Surgical Hospital, saw crowds carrying the body through the streets while chanting religious slogans. One man was heard crying, "How did this happen, my brother died."
Nehad Ajouri also expressed defiance, saying the Israeli army does not want Palestinians to have a presence on the land, but asserted that "another generation will come after you." He noted that Islam is neither the first nor the last martyr.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident.
