G20 finance chiefs focus on growth push, non-market economy imbalances
At the G20 finance ministers' summit, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the key themes were pro-growth policies and imbalances from non-market economies.
Finance ministers from the Group of 20 major economies gathered in Asheville, North Carolina, this week with a shared ambition for stronger economic expansion, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Bessent said the summit's two central themes were a collective desire for pro-growth outcomes and a focus on global imbalances. He noted that several non-market economies are running large imbalances that are effectively draining growth from the rest of the world.
"I think the two big messages here are everyone wants to be pro-growth, will they take the measures that it needs ... and then the other thing we've been talking about too are imbalances, and we're seeing a lot of non-market economies with these big imbalances that are sucking growth from the rest of the world," Bessent said.
The remarks highlight the ongoing debate within the G20 about how to balance domestic growth priorities with the spillover effects of state-driven economic policies.
