G4 Renews Push for UN Security Council Reform, Backs India's Permanent Seat Bid

The G4 grouping of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan has renewed its campaign for reform of the United Nations Security Council, describing the body's present structure as outdated.

The four countries have long argued that the Council's composition no longer reflects the realities of the contemporary world, and their fresh push places the question of expansion back at the centre of international debate.

Speaking on India's claim to a permanent seat, former diplomat Suresh Goel said the country's case extends beyond its own national interests. He pointed to India's position as a major voice of the Global South, arguing that the world needs India at the table.

Goel also stressed that consensus-building will be essential to advancing the reform agenda, indicating that broad agreement among member states remains the key challenge.

The renewed G4 effort highlights the continuing gap between the Council's post-war design and the geopolitical weight of emerging powers, a demand that has gathered momentum alongside calls for greater representation of developing countries in global governance.
