Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on September 14: city-wise puja muhurat timings

Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayaka Chaturthi, marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity worshipped as the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. This year the ten-day festival begins on Monday, September 14, with the main celebrations and idol installations taking place during the auspicious muhurat on that day.

Tithi timings

The Chaturthi Tithi begins at 7:06 am on September 14 and concludes at 7:44 am on September 15. Devotees who were unsure whether the festival falls on September 14 or 15 can note that the primary observances are centred on September 14.

The Ganapati Sthapana puja, during which the Ganesha idol is installed and consecrated, has different windows across cities:

How the festival is observed

On Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees bring Lord Ganesha idols into their homes, perform puja, observe fasts and prepare traditional dishes. The celebrations conclude with Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on September 25, when idols are carried in grand processions and immersed in rivers, lakes or the sea. Those who keep the idol at home for a shorter period may perform visarjan on the 1.5th, 3rd, 5th or 7th day.
