Ganga crosses danger mark at Patna's Gandhi Ghat as Bihar battles floods
Ganga at Patna's Gandhi Ghat rose 1 cm above the highest flood level on Sept 5, prompting a caution advisory.
The Ganga river at Patna's Gandhi Ghat has crossed the highest flood level, raising concerns of inundation in low-lying areas of the Bihar capital. An official bulletin from the state's Water Resources Department on Saturday morning recorded the water level at 50.53 cm, which is 1 cm above the highest flood mark, after rising 10 cm in the preceding four hours.
The department has forecast a further rise to 50.62 cm by Sunday morning and has advised residents to exercise caution. The advisory comes as several rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, Punpun, and Ghaghra, are flowing above danger levels following heavy rainfall in Bihar and neighbouring Nepal.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of affected areas on Friday and reviewed relief operations. He directed officials to identify affected families, ensure timely distribution of relief, and continuously monitor vulnerable zones and Ganga embankments from Buxar to Bhagalpur to prevent erosion and breaches.
