Gaza Mother Finally Mourns Family as Bodies Recovered a Year After Strike
A Gaza mother mourns her husband and three children after their bodies were recovered from rubble, a year after an Israeli airstrike.
In a somber gathering in Gaza City on Saturday night, families who had waited months for closure finally received it, as the remains of 100 Palestinians killed during the war were laid out for a last farewell. The bodies, recovered from beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings, were draped in Palestinian flags as relatives lit candles and wept beside them.
Among the mourners was Maryam al-Balaawi, who knelt beside the bodies of her husband, Mahmoud, and her three children — Hala, Maya, and Mohamed. They were killed in an Israeli airstrike in 2025, but their bodies had remained trapped under the debris until now.
"Our entire life is gone. My husband was martyred and my children were martyred. I have no life left," al-Balaawi said, her voice heavy with grief. She spoke of her surviving daughter, who cries daily for her father. "My daughter cries every day, she wants her father."
Al-Balaawi recalled her husband's final words before his death, when he asked her to ensure his body was covered and buried. For a year, she had waited for the chance to see him one last time. The funeral service is scheduled for Sunday.
Civil defense crews in Gaza continue the arduous task of recovering bodies from sites destroyed since the conflict began on October 7, 2023. Thousands of Palestinians remain unaccounted for, their fates unknown beneath the ruins of their former homes.
