Gaza mourners bury commander Israel says was Hamas figure in Khan Younis

Mourners in Khan Younis gathered on Friday around the body of Mohammad Yazouri, which was draped in a Hamas flag with a weapon placed on top, after he was killed in a strike in southern Gaza.

The Israeli military said Yazouri was a Hamas commander in Khan Younis and had been appointed to the position after serving in several roles, including deputy commander of the Khan Younis Brigade.

He was killed on Thursday night along with two other men, according to the account of the strike.

The burial ceremony began inside a mosque, where mourners sat near the body. A person then covered it with the flag of the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. The body, again topped with the brigades' flag and a weapon, was carried out and placed on the ground for prayers.

After the prayers, mourners lifted the body and marched through the streets, chanting as they went.

Strikes across Gaza have continued despite a fragile ceasefire put in place almost a year ago. Israel says it targets Hamas and what it describes as militant infrastructure.

Since the ceasefire began in October, more than 1,350 Palestinians have been killed and more than 4,540 injured, according to Gaza's health ministry.
