Geoje Landslide Kills One After Record 800mm Rainfall

A fatal landslide struck an apartment building in Geoje, South Korea, after over 800mm of rain fell over the weekend.

A weekend of relentless downpours in South Korea's southern region has turned deadly, with a landslide in the coastal city of Geoje claiming the life of a resident. The city recorded more than 800 millimeters of rain, triggering a series of emergencies across the area.

The fatal incident occurred on Monday morning when a landslide slammed into an apartment building. Firefighters responding to the scene were able to rescue three residents from the structure. However, one of those rescued was later pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

Beyond the direct impact of the landslide, the heavy rainfall caused significant disruption. Local streams overflowed their banks, leading to flooding in several schools and kindergartens throughout the region. In a separate neighborhood of Geoje, another landslide was reported, though authorities confirmed there were no casualties from that event.

The extreme weather also affected neighboring areas. The city of Tongyeong, located nearby, received more than 600 millimeters of rain over the same period. Heavy rain warnings remained in effect for five areas within South Gyeongsang Province over the weekend as the region continued to grapple with the aftermath of the severe weather.
