German FM in Kyiv Reaffirms Support, Urges New Push for Peace Talks
Germany's foreign minister visited Kyiv, pledging continued support and urging new efforts to restart peace talks with Russia.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Kyiv on Saturday, using the visit to underscore Berlin's steadfast backing for Ukraine just days before the country marks its 35th Independence Day.
Speaking alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Wadephul framed the war's outcome as a defining moment for Europe's future. He insisted that the conflict must conclude with the strength of international law prevailing, not the law of the strongest. To that end, he confirmed ongoing discussions with European and non-European partners on sustaining military aid, with a specific focus on bolstering Ukraine's air defense systems.
Wadephul also addressed the stalled diplomatic track, calling for a willingness to explore unconventional approaches to initiate talks. He acknowledged that current efforts are being blocked by Moscow, but expressed belief that persistent pressure—combined with unwavering support for Ukraine—could eventually pave the way for negotiations.
The German minister revealed plans to discuss the matter with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio early next week, expressing hope that Washington would continue to play an active role in the process.
In a direct message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Wadephul asserted that Ukraine and its allies possess the endurance needed to achieve their ultimate objective: a lasting peace.
