German Grid Hit by Second Sabotage Attempt in Two Days
German police investigate a second sabotage attempt on power infrastructure, this time at a substation in Bergheim, following similar damage in Brandenburg.
German authorities are investigating what they describe as a fresh act of sabotage against the country's electricity infrastructure, marking the second such incident in as many days.
Police in the western city of Bergheim confirmed on Wednesday that they are looking into an act of premeditated vandalism targeting technical equipment at a local substation. The incident occurred at around 1800 GMT on Tuesday.
A police spokesperson said the attack did not disrupt the regional power supply, though they declined to provide specific details about the extent of the damage inflicted.
The development comes shortly after power lines in the eastern state of Brandenburg were damaged by rockets carrying conductive material on the same day. That incident also pointed to deliberate interference with the grid.
Separately, Berlin has accused Russia of being behind an attempted drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle airport last month. In response, the German government has announced a series of countermeasures, though specifics were not immediately disclosed.
The string of incidents underscores growing concerns over the security of critical infrastructure in Germany, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
