Germany Looks to Algeria for Gas Storage Support

Germany's top diplomat has indicated that Algeria could play a role in replenishing the country's gas storage facilities, as Berlin intensifies efforts to diversify its energy supply sources.

During a visit to Algiers, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said cooperation between the two nations is "definitely possible," describing the North African country as a reliable partner. He stressed the importance of dependable allies and resilient supply chains, particularly in Germany's immediate neighbourhood, for securing both critical raw materials and energy security.

Wadephul did not disclose specifics about potential agreements. The remarks come as Germany continues to restructure its energy imports following the halt of Russian gas deliveries in 2022, which occurred after Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Currently, Germany's gas storage sites are about 53 percent full, according to industry data, a notable drop from over 70 percent at the same time last year. This decline reflects traders' reluctance to purchase gas at elevated prices amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Norway remains Germany's largest natural gas supplier for 2025, but the government is actively seeking additional partners to strengthen energy resilience.
