Germany to deepen global partnerships regardless of Trump, says Klingbeil

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has said that a large number of countries are keen to deepen their cooperation with Germany, and that Berlin intends to take full advantage of those openings without letting its course be dictated by the United States.

Speaking on Friday, Klingbeil argued that Germany should not allow its decisions to be shaped by the shifting positions of U.S. President Donald Trump. He said Berlin ought to distance itself somewhat from whatever mood the American president happens to be in, from what is currently occupying his mind, and from whatever action he may threaten next.

The remarks came as Klingbeil prepared to join a meeting of finance ministers in Dublin, where European counterparts were due to discuss economic and financial matters.

His comments signal a push for Germany to broaden its international engagement at a time when many governments have expressed interest in working more closely with Europe's largest economy. Klingbeil's message places emphasis on pursuing those opportunities on Germany's own terms rather than reacting to external pressure or rhetoric.
