Overnight Storms Leave One Dead, Several Injured Across Germany
A woman died and others were injured as severe storms and a tornado swept through parts of Germany, causing widespread damage.
Severe overnight storms swept across parts of Germany, leaving at least one person dead and several others injured. The extreme weather caused significant structural damage and disrupted transport and power networks in multiple regions.
In the town of Fürstenwalde, located roughly 78 kilometers southeast of Berlin, a tornado tore through the area, ripping roofs off buildings and toppling numerous trees. Emergency crews were called to clear debris from roads and assess damage to residential blocks and a local daycare center. The deputy fire chief reported that five blocks sustained major roof damage and that around 25 trees had fallen in the area, with many blocking traffic routes.
A separate, tragic incident occurred in Waldorf, a town in the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Two women, aged 58 and 47, were walking together when the storm hit. They sought shelter under a covered seating area, but a tree was uprooted and fell on them. The 58-year-old woman died at the scene, while the 47-year-old was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Further west, in Höhr-Grenzhausen, strong winds tore walls from at least two homes. Flying debris and falling building facades caused additional damage, and several trees were uprooted. The area also experienced a widespread power outage, and strong gusts overturned a truck on the A61 highway.
Emergency services also reported numerous weather-related callouts overnight in the states of Hesse, Thuringia, and Bavaria, as the storm system moved across the country.
