German authorities are responding to two fresh suspected attempts to disrupt the country's electricity grid, escalating security concerns just days after Berlin accused Moscow of orchestrating a drone attack on Leipzig airport.
In the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, police in Dormagen are examining an apparent effort to short-circuit a local power grid installation. According to local reports, a letter claiming responsibility for the act has been received.
Separately, in the northern town of Ganderkesee, a transformer station was cordoned off on Friday after officers reported suspicious circumstances. A police spokesperson told public broadcaster NDR that a discovery had been made overnight requiring a response, though no danger to the public was identified. Further details were not immediately provided.
These incidents follow two other suspected sabotage cases earlier this week. In Bergheim, also in North Rhine-Westphalia, vandalism at a substation forced lignite power plant units with a combined capacity of 4,200 megawatts to temporarily go offline. In the eastern state of Brandenburg, devices carrying conductive material damaged power lines at a critical high-voltage node.
