Germany Pledges Continued Support for Ukraine on 35th Independence Day

Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine as the country marks its 35th Independence Day. During a government briefing in Berlin on Monday, spokesperson Stefan Kornelius outlined the focus of upcoming consultations, which will center on continued military assistance, intensifying pressure on Russia, and long-term security guarantees for a sovereign Ukraine.

Kornelius praised the resilience of the Ukrainian people, noting that they have been defending their nation for the fifth consecutive year with what he described as "impressive courage" against Russia's illegal war of aggression. He emphasized that Ukraine's struggle extends beyond its own borders, asserting that the country is also defending the security and freedom of Germany and Europe.

While acknowledging Ukraine's readiness for "serious negotiations and an immediate ceasefire," Kornelius pointed to Russia's escalating attacks, which have become increasingly brutal and have targeted civilians and critical infrastructure. He noted that hundreds of civilians have been mourned in recent weeks and months alone.

The spokesperson also highlighted Russia's actions in the Black Sea, where attacks on grain ships and ports threaten global food supplies. He further accused Moscow of openly threatening the EU and NATO with hybrid attacks.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected to renew Germany's pledge to stand firmly by Ukraine's side, with discussions set to cover immediate wartime needs such as air defense, as well as longer-term resilience measures, including support for Ukraine's energy supply.
