Germany Says Weapons Cache Near Berlin Was Meant for Attacks
German authorities say a weapons cache found near Berlin was intended for attacks, with a suspect arrested in Romania.
Germany's interior minister said Friday that a stash of weapons and ammunition discovered near Berlin last year was intended for use in attacks, and that a suspect has been taken into custody in Romania.
Alexander Dobrindt told reporters in Berlin that federal prosecutors have opened an investigation into the discovery, which was first reported by German media. He said the involvement of "foreign powers" could not be ruled out and that the probe would examine that possibility.
The minister described the case as a "high-risk situation," saying the investigation targets "intelligence agency activity and the preparation of a serious state-endangering crime." He did not provide further details.
Dobrindt said the suspect held in Romania had "attack plans." Romanian authorities did not immediately comment on the matter.
German authorities were alerted to the possible cache in October and later located it outside Berlin. "Two handguns and corresponding ammunition were stored in this hiding place," Dobrindt said.
The federal prosecutors' office in Karlsruhe declined to comment when contacted.
