Gloria Steinem, Voice of American Feminism, Dies at 92

Gloria Steinem, the writer and activist who became the most recognizable figure of the American women's liberation movement, has died at the age of 92. Her official Instagram account confirmed that she passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by loved ones.

The statement described her near-century of life as "years well-lived," noting that she continued her advocacy for equality until the very end. It also highlighted her enduring independence, curiosity, and humor, and mentioned that she spent her final years doing what she loved most: writing and being in community with others. She had hosted hundreds of guests in her living room for "Talking Circles," a tradition she insisted should continue after her death.

Steinem began her journalism career in New York in the 1970s and soon helped launch Ms. magazine, which became a cornerstone of feminist media. She also co-founded the Women's Action Alliance, an organization dedicated to combating sexism. Throughout the decade, she was a vocal advocate for reproductive rights and welcomed the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which affirmed a constitutional right to abortion.
