Goa Cop Faces Departmental Action After Row Over Rs 170 Naan Bill

A dispute over the price of a cheese garlic naan has landed a Goa Police sub-inspector in trouble. The force has initiated a departmental inquiry against the official after he was accused of abusing and threatening staff at a restaurant in Porvorim, North Goa.

The incident came to light after the restaurant owner alleged misconduct by the police official. According to police, the sub-inspector and a friend had dined at the establishment and later argued with staff over the cost of the item, which was priced at Rs 170. A purported CCTV video of the confrontation, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the official and another man confronting a staffer.

The issue was raised in the Goa Legislative Assembly on Wednesday by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao. Terming the incident "shocking," the Congress MLA demanded the suspension of the officer. Responding to the matter, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that an inquiry had been initiated.

In an official statement, the Goa Police said the sub-inspector, identified as Viraj Sawant, posted at Porvorim police station, has been attached to the GRP in Altinho for his alleged misbehaviour with hotel staff. The statement added that further departmental action has been initiated.

The force reiterated that misconduct, corruption, and violation of service discipline will not be tolerated, and that appropriate action will be taken against any personnel found violating the law or service rules. The disciplinary proceedings are being conducted in accordance with prescribed rules and principles of natural justice.
