Godavari inflow drops at Dowleswaram as relief work continues in Chintoor
Godavari inflow at Dowleswaram fell to 7.79 lakh cusecs, easing flood pressure on delta islands and tribal pockets in Polavaram district as relief operations continue.
Flood pressure on the Godavari eased on Tuesday (September 29, 2026), with the river's inflow at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowleswaram falling to 7.79 lakh cusecs over the past 24 hours, down from 9.60 lakh cusecs. The development brought relief to the delta islands and to tribal habitations along the banks of the Sabari and the Godavari in Polavaram district.
The first flood warning at Dowleswaram is issued when inflow touches 10 lakh cusecs. On Monday morning the barrage had received 9.66 lakh cusecs, only a few thousand short of that threshold, and Water Resources Department officials had since operated the gates of the Polavaram project to hold the flow below the warning level. At least 2,500 cusecs of floodwater is being diverted into the canals, with the remainder emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
The inflow continued to decline through Tuesday, the flood report showed. The Water Resources Department is monitoring the situation.
Relief operations remain under way in the Chintoor agency of Polavaram district, where 17 habitations have been submerged. As many as 55 motor boats deployed by the Chintoor Integrated Tribal Development Agency are carrying essential commodities to affected tribal residents.
Downstream of Dowleswaram, fishermen have been asked to stay off the river until the flood fully recedes. In the Akhanda Godavari, the stretch between the Papikonda hill range and Rajamahendravaram, traditional fishermen have been told to suspend fishing.
