Google Opens Pre-Orders for $899 Googlebook Laptops Built Around Gemini AI

Google has begun taking pre-orders for Googlebook, a new premium laptop category aimed at Android users and built around the company's Gemini AI tools. The line starts at $899, with initial models coming from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

The first Googlebook machines will run on Intel or Qualcomm processors and offer up to 14 hours of battery life, the company said. The devices combine the Android technology stack with desktop foundations from ChromeOS, a pairing intended to make moving between a phone and a computer more seamless.

Gemini features sit at the centre of the offering. According to the company, the tools can help users draft and organise text, ask questions about content on their screens, and pick up tasks from an Android phone.

The launch places Googlebook in a market where Chromebook makers have traditionally competed for students and budget-conscious buyers on price and simplicity. Google is now extending that approach into premium laptops with stronger hardware, AI features and closer Android integration.

Competition is intensifying as Apple moves deeper into lower-priced laptops with its $699 MacBook Neo. For Google, the Googlebook line also represents its latest attempt to build a flagship showcase for ChromeOS, following the Pixelbook in 2017 and the Pixelbook Go in 2019.
