Google, OpenAI and Anthropic Form Independent AI Safety Standards Body

Google, OpenAI and Anthropic are setting up an independent AI safety standards body, tentatively called the Standards Authority for Frontier AI, and have approached Sriram Krishnan to lead it.

Three leading artificial intelligence developers — Google, OpenAI and Anthropic — are establishing a joint body to set safety standards for advanced AI systems, a move that would create an industry-led framework in an area where formal government regulation is still taking shape.

The initiative, tentatively named the Standards Authority for Frontier AI, is designed to function independently, according to people familiar with the plans. Its backers intend it to fill the gap left by the absence of comprehensive official oversight of frontier AI models.

As part of the effort, the companies have approached Sriram Krishnan to serve as the body's chief executive. It was not immediately clear whether he has accepted the position or how far the discussions have progressed.

The grouping brings together three of the most prominent players in the development of large-scale AI systems, all of which have faced growing scrutiny over the risks posed by increasingly capable models. By pooling resources around a common set of standards, the companies appear to be positioning the new authority as a complement to — rather than a replacement for — eventual regulation.

Details of the body's structure, membership and timeline remain limited. The tentative name suggests its focus will be on frontier models, the most advanced systems that sit at the centre of current safety debates.

The development comes amid a broader global push to establish guardrails for AI, with governments and multilateral forums debating how best to oversee the technology without stifling innovation.
