Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has welcomed the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration at the BRICS 2026 Summit, describing it as a sign of the grouping's shared resolve to build a partnership that is more resilient, innovative and equitable.
In a post on X, Goyal said the declaration showed that BRICS has widened its scope and strengthened its sense of purpose, and that the grouping is together amplifying the voice of the Global South. He congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the other BRICS leaders on the adoption of the document.
According to Goyal, the declaration lays out a clear direction for cooperation that goes beyond traditional areas. It points to deeper engagement on artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, Digital Public Infrastructure, startups, micro, small and medium enterprises, and science and research. It also envisages a stronger New Development Bank and closer coordination on food, health and energy security, along with resilient supply chains.
The New Delhi Declaration was adopted by BRICS leaders on Saturday at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. It calls for closer cooperation among member countries in Information and Communication Technologies, underlining their role in driving socio-economic development and speeding up digital transformation.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the BRICS principles of mutual respect and understanding, sovereign equality, solidarity, democracy, openness, inclusiveness, collaboration and consensus. They also reiterated their pledge to strengthen the BRICS strategic partnership for the benefit of their people.
